As psychedelic drugs make their comeback, one Toronto shop is taking a stand to sell them legally. Amid a city that’s become a progressive hotbed for cannabis legalization, Shroomyz is the only brick-and-mortar store selling magic mushrooms in the city. It’s a small, tightly packed store that has been the subject of a police raid and a city bylaw — but is still open for business.
Are mushrooms good or bad for health?
The company’s straightforward signage, with an image of a shrooms toronto and the mission “Focus/Guide/Heal,” makes it clear what’s for sale. The store, on Queen Street West in downtown’s Parkdale neighbourhood, also has an Instagram account and lists hours of operation from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
An eighth of an ounce costs $30 to $50, while a half-ounce is about $100 to $150, depending on the strain. A full ounce is around $200 to $250. The store sells everything from capsules (Penis Envy is popular) to gummies and chocolate bars that contain the hallucinogenic compound psilocybin. The sour taste of shrooms can be off-putting to many, but the edibles are an easy way for those seeking a microdose to try the drug, according to Padilla-Brown. Reddit threads muse on the quality of these products, with some users wondering whether they’re really made from psilocybin or a synthetic substitute called 4-AcO-DMT.
While the City of Toronto uses bylaws to target cannabis stores, there are no plans to shut down the shop, a city spokeswoman tells CBC. The mayor’s office has not responded to a request for comment.
